Community Church receive SonicWall’s Clean VPN to Secure its Appliances

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

SonicWALL Internet security , a major provider of network security, will be providing SonicWall Clean VPN to Northwoods Community Church in Peoria, Illinois for its infrastracture security. The company will combine SonicWall’s SSL-VPN 2000 secure remote access appliance with a SonicWall E-Class NSA E5500 network security appliance.

Northwood’s IT Director Jason Lee explained the need for secure network as the church has several staff who frequenty travel and need constant access to data from their servers. “Knowing that our network is safe and secure and invulnerable from outside attacks, will enable us to sleep soundly at night. Providing clean and secure remote access to our networks offers a huge value to us.”

Northwoods’ E5500 firewall scans both inbound and outbound SSL VPN traffic using Gateway Antivirus, Anti-Spyware and Intrusion Prevention services.

As a nonprofit organization, Northwoods is especially sensitive to value.

Lee said that despite the organization’s little amount of resources, it wants to have the most advanced technology, yet affordable that is available in the market to ensure the growth of the organization. “SonicWALL gives us security and performance that might be out of our budget’s reach from a Cisco or Juniper.”

By selecting SonicWALL Internet security’s E-Class, Lee freed up budget for other initiatives. And using Unified Threat Management instead of separate services and servers from different vendors has lowered his costs, and eased budgeting and planning.

Lee said they were satisifed with SonicWall’s services that they are planning of expanding the implementation of the firm’s Clean Wireless system.

“We currently have 13 SonicPoints deployed to cover high-traffic areas of our campus,” said Lee. “We apply Gateway Antivirus, Anti-Spyware and Intrusion Prevention services, as well as Content Filtering, to all inbound and outbound traffic on our wireless network.”

The SonicWALL Internet security E-Class Network Security Appliance (NSA) E5500 is a high-performance, multi-service network security platform engineered to be the workhorse of the enterprise network environment. Taking advantage of SonicWALL’s Reassembly-free Deep Packet Inspection™ engine and an 8-core processor technology providing parallel traffic processing, the NSA E5500 delivers exceptional deep packet inspection performance for the enterprise network environment.

6 Tips To Speed Up Your PC!

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Here are six simple steps which, if followed, will result in faster peformance and a more secure computing environment.

1. If you have never used keyboard shortcuts, now is the time to try. These can save you lots of time and extra mouse movement! Take Windows + M for example. This simple shortcut minimises all open windows in one quick sequence. Imagine how long it would take to click minimise on each of ten open windows. Windows + E open Windows Explorer directly. Windows + L locks your computer if you need to leave your desk.

2. Most PC users are in agreement about the most pointless features of Windows Operating Systems. The delete confirmation dialog (’Are you sure you want to send this file to the recycle bin?’) is certainly in the top 10 of annoying and repetative time wasters. If you do happen to make a genuine mistake while deleting, you can always restore a file from the recycle bin, so this dialog serves no useful purpose. You should turn it off and start saving some time. Right click on the Recycle Bin and untick the option to display the delete confirmation dialog.

3. Run Windows defragmenter at regular intervals to keep hard disk performance in good shape. The defragmenter does this by physically organizing the contents of the disk to store the pieces of each file close together on the hard drive. This results in noticably faster performance. Do a defrag once a month, or better still schedule this task (you can do this if you’re using Vista).

4.Update Windows regularly. Computer hackers are constantly finding new ways to attack your computer with viruses & other malware. Microsoft continually searches for security vulnerabilities in their software and provides security updates to fix them. The security fixes are available, but computer users don’t get them installed quickly enough. Head into your Control Panel & turn on Automatic Updates right away. An added advantage of activating Automatic Updates is that Microsoft provides other software updates that make your computer run better and faster. For example, an update may fix an issue with a hardware device, improve the performance of your computer, or deliver improved functionality.

5. Make sure all of your user accounts are password protected, especially the default Administrator account. If this has already been done, think about whether your existing passwords are good enough. Simple passwords are dangerous. If you’re using any of the following for passwords you probably aren’t as secure as you think: names of children, pets, parents, phone numbers or birthdays. Something like Zs86jF03t is much more effective. Notice the mix of upper and lowercase letters interspersed with numbers.

6.Get some decent Antivirus software. The free options are strugling this year. 2009 to date has been the worst ever for malware infections. Ask any tech or Computer Repair shop and they will confirm this. You need to strengthen your security to have a better chance of staying virus free. Not all antivirus software is equal. Some perform very poorly and are a total waste of money. Before buying, do some research & read some reviews. Antivirus software by itself is much better than bundled products from the likes of Norton & McAfee which includes antivirus, antispyware & firewall functionality all in one. These extra features are usually not very good and cause no end of headaches for end users. It’s much better to buy the best antivirus software that you can, and then look for the best antispyware application separately.

Youve arrived at the end. Be a responsible computer owner, head off and try these tips out!
