Reimage Review - Fixing A Registry File That Cannot Load The Hive

In essence, the registry file stores all the configuration settings for your applications, hardware devices and operating system processes. Given the variety of applications users install on their PCs, the potential for the registry having faulty keys is very high. This article details how the tool Reimage has repaired a particularly tricky registry problem on my desktop computer that occurred due to application changes.

At the start of the year I cleared out unused applications on my PC to make some space on the drives. After rebooting the system I witnessed a fatal Windows error that stated the registry file cannot load the hive (a hive is a grouping of registry keys relating to a user that gets backed up to the file system).

Alarming as this initially appeared, it was good to know the issue was purely with the registry so could therefore be repaired. I make back-up copies of the registry regularly so knew it was conceivable to swap in an earlier copy.

The first step was to attempt to start Windows in safe-mode. If this had worked then it would be possible to use an old version of the registry.

Unfortunately, this was not an option in my circumstance as Windows failed to start up, even in safe-mode, so the only option was to boot from the Windows boot disk or use pc maintenance software to start up and scan the machine.

After some research, I discovered the Reimage online scanning and repair service which provided an optional boot disk when safe-mode doesn’t work. The Reimage boot disk got Windows started up in a pseudo safe mode with an operational IE browser. The product runs a scan from within IE (it uses Active X). The scan picked up dozens of issues with the registry file along with out-of-date device drivers.

The reparation stage downloaded and installed the drivers and changed the erroneous registry keys. Thankfully the PC then rebooted and started correctly once more without issue.

In hindsight, if the system had been able to boot from safe-mode then there would have been the option of swapping the registry for an older copy. Alternately, if I still had the XP boot disk then I may have been able to get in and repair the system that way. As a last resort, Reimage was able to repair the registry in less than 30 minutes and is definitely worth consideration if other avenues fail to fix your registry. At the very least it beats re-installing Windows.

Reimage Review - Running PC Repairs On Auto Pilot

Reimage is the product of choice for Windows users who require a computer repair and maintenance solution, but do not wish to pay expensive technician costs or be without their PC for long periods of time. I’ve been using Reimage since September 2008 on three computers, so have benefited from stable, fast, bug-free computers as a result of using Reimage.

What is Reimage?

Reimage is a PC maintenance software solution that you run from over the internet that can refresh the files (OS, registry and software applications) to make your computer run like new. Most notably, it does this (a) without formatting your computer (b) without reinstalling Windows and (c) without losing any of your precious personal data.

It checks the wellbeing of your system files in a half hour scan, diagnoses operating system (OS) issues, and replaces anything diagnosed as faulty or missing on the PC using a spare parts repository of 25 million files (these files reside on the Reimage web servers). After viewing the scan results for yourself, a 30 minute pc repair process can be started to fix all the faults. It finishes up by doing a full reboot for the repairs to take effect.

Files can become faulty or go missing over time due to application installations, virus damage, faulty drivers, broken registry key entries or just not being kept up to date with the latest file versions. Reimage can do the pc troubleshooting and then repair all of these faults.

Does It Actually Work?

I started using Reimage in September 2008. In this time, I have run a full scan on a quarterly basis against each of three computers (2 desktops and a work laptop). The automated scan takes 30 minutes and I am happy to say that it has performed excellently every time.

The initial troubleshooting scan on each machine picked up a lot of damaged system files which it was able to fix using their repository of healthy files. I allotted these issues to installation/removal of a great many applications and hardware upgrades that I have made to the computers over the years.

After Reimage repaired all files identified as missing or needing replacement (the online pc repair process has at most taken 30 minutes to complete) and the system was rebooted I noted quicker boot-up times straight away, improved stability of my applications and better internet connection performance. In particular, music/video applications benefited from the updated drivers.

One major benefit of using Reimage is that no personal data regarding login details/settings in applications/etc. were lost following repairs. This was a key point in running this on my work laptop which I use daily so needed to turnaround repairs in a single evening. It only needed 45 minutes as it turned out and repaired Windows XP without needing to re-format the drives, while leaving all user data and software intact!

There are so many computer manufacturers in this day and age that it’s difficult to figure out which one is good. Luckily, I’ve done all the research for you and can tell you.

Dell has been the leader in business laptops but their market share has declined in recent years. The new laptops are pretty slick though so it’s definitely work a look but the quality is only okay.

Apple makes sleek looking products and they look the nicest hands down. Their prices are quite a bit higher though so you may want to seriously think about it before you jump on board.

The laptops from gateway is just not that great. Many have experienced quality issues and the price isn’t awesome to begin with. If you find an once in a lifetime sale, then go ahead but don’t get it at normal price.

The Acer laptops in North America are coming together too. The specs are good for the price, the size is right and the design is decent. It’s an asian manufacturer but who cares right?

With Microsoft really cracking down on software piracy and coming up with extremely clever ways to stop everyone from copying Windows, many people are slowly not buying eMachines anymore.

Sony can really corner the market with a complete solution since they have the gaming console, laptop and electronics like TVs. If they can only come up with clever software solutions, they will be really good.

Check out the HP laptops because they are solid and have good quality and warranty service. If you like the performance of a particular model, I wouldn’t hesitate to just buy it.

If you don’t mind the black boring look, Lenovo laptops are actually a pretty good option. Check out their systems and you might be surprised at the specs of those laptops.

Nokia has a netbook so it’s technically a player in the field. You know their cell phone technology is unbeatable and their design is good too.
